What do former prime minister Stephen Harper and the provincial premiers have in common? They all topped this year’s ‘naughty’ list, according to a new Ipsos poll.
The poll, conducted exclusively for Global News, found a majority (66 per cent) of Canadians put Harper on Santa’s “naughty” list, while 59 per cent placed their province’s premier on the list.
“The victory of Justin Trudeau was largely about turning the page on Stephen Harper and telling him his time is up,” said Sean Simpson, vice-president of Ipsos. “So it’s not surprising to see him at the bottom of the list. In fact the proportion of the people who say he is on nice list is very close to the proportion of the vote he receive in the last election.”
Interim Conservative Leader Rona Ambrose and the Toronto Maple Leafs hovered around 50 per cent, 51 per cent put Ambrose on “naughty” list, while 48 per cent put the Leafs on the list.
Who’s on the nice list? Canadians.
Meanwhile, a majority of Canadians unsurprisingly listed themselves on Santa’s “nice” list, followed by Pope Francis, 83 per cent, and Queen Elizabeth, 80 per cent.

“I always think it’s shocking that people put themselves ahead of the pope. That’s a fairly pious group of Canadians,” Simpson said.

The Toronto Blue Jays, who made the playoffs for the first time in 22 years, made the nice list with 79 per cent support along with U.S. President Barack Obama, 72 per cent, newly minted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, 70 per cent, and the Toronto Raptors, despite being swept in the first round of the NBA playoffs, with 67 per cent.
Looking across the provinces, all premiers received extremely low marks from Canadians. Seventy- seven per cent of respondents in the Atlantic Provinces put their premiers on the “naughty” list, while 75 per cent of Quebecers put Premier Philippe Couillard on the list.
The low marks continued across the country, with B.C. residents putting Christy Clark on the naughty list with 67 per cent, Ontario Kathleen Wynne made the list with 65 per cent, and Saskatchewan and Manitoba put Brad Wall and Greg Selinger in Santa’s bad books with 58 per cent.
Alberta Premier Rachel Notley was the only premier to make the “nice” list with 51 per cent.
However, Canadians were also hard on Santa Claus himself as his approval ratings slipped seven points down from 85 per cent in 2014 to 78 per cent in 2015, according to the Ipsos poll.
