Winnipeg police want impaired drivers off the roads

WINNIPEG — Winnipeg police haven’t seen much improvement in numbers from their check stop program last year.

During the second week of the program in 2014 there were 6 impaired driving arrests and 6 licence suspensions. This year there have been 17 drivers charged with impaired driving and 6 licence suspensions.

Police say while there isn’t a big change in numbers, they are noticing that education is making a difference.

“I see a lot of younger drivers now, where people in the car are intoxicated but the driver is sober, so they have a designated driver,” Const. Chris Wingfield said.

Winnipeg police want to remind everyone that if they do have plans that involve alcohol over the holidays to make sure they have a designated driver, take a cab or call Operation Red Nose.

“We’re hoping to get the message out there, let’s find a safe ride home, lets make a smart decision, don’t drink and drive,” Wingfield said.
