CALGARY – The Government of Alberta announced Wednesday it will be offering police departments throughout the province the opportunity to apply for grants to raise awareness about the dangers of fentanyl and other street drugs.

The proceeds of crime grants will be available to police agencies to help fund drug prevention and awareness programs with the help of their community partners.

“Recent deaths in our province have highlighted the tragic consequences of street drugs and just how dangerous fentanyl can be,” said Minister of Justice and Solicitor General Kathleen Ganley in a news release.

“These grants will help our law enforcement partners increase awareness about the dangers of fentanyl and other street drugs through prevention and awareness initiatives.”

Proceeds of crime grants are supported with funds forfeited to the province following federally-prosecuted Criminal Code offences. The total funding available is $220,000, with a maximum of $20,000 per project for an 18-month period.

The Edmonton Police Service said it welcomes the grant program.

“The EPS will look to use grant funds to develop and enhance crime prevention activities and drug-related education initiatives. The EPS is appreciative of the Government of Alberta’s efforts to help combat the dangers of street drugs in Edmonton,” said Deputy Chief Brian Simpson.

Application forms for the grants will be available starting on Dec. 18. The deadline for applications is noon on Feb. 12, 2016. The Province said proposals will be reviewed by an impartial review committee.
