A 28-year-old woman from Maskwacis was charged with second-degree murder in the death of a baby after the 15-month-old was found dead at a home on the Samson Cree Nation.

Emergency Medical Services responded to a report of a child in distress at approximately 8:43 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5. When they arrived, they determined the baby was dead.

The RCMP Major Crimes Unit is working with members of the Maskwacis RCMP detachment.

An autopsy done on Dec. 7 determined the baby’s death was a homicide.

The woman charged in the death is scheduled to make her first court appearance in Wetaskiwin on Tuesday.

The RCMP said her name is not being released in order to protect the identity of other children.

*EDITOR’S NOTE: RCMP initially stated the baby was 14 months old. This article was corrected with confirmation the baby was 15 months old.
