Property tax increases kept low in Pointe-Claire

POINTE-CLAIRE – Property owners in Pointe-Claire are getting some tax relief next year.

The bill for home owners is increasing, but only by 1.25 per cent, which is less than the national rate of inflation.

Business owners aren’t seeing any increases in their property taxes – they’ve been frozen for 2016.

However, the total amount you pay to the city could be significantly higher; the tax bill also depends on valuation increases on your home or business.

The city also plans to spend more than $100 million on capital works projects during the next three years. Most of the spending will be for infrastructure work.

The total amount budgeted for road maintenance and repairs isn’t clearly identified in the budget.

Many people who live or drive through the city hope a significant investment will be made to improve the roads. Many are deteriorating, especially some of the critical routes such as Hymus Boulevard and Donegani Avenue.

“The roads are terrible, especially the cracks and, you know, there are still a lot of areas that still need a lot of improvement,” one female driver told Global News while waiting at a traffic light.

Peter Eccles is a delivery man for Domino’s. While the employee doesn’t live in Pointe-Claire he does drive on its roads and lately he complains the streets have taken a toll on his vehicle.

“My last bill was $522 for the suspension. Just for the suspension,” Eccles told Global News.

Last year, Pointe-Claire budgeted more than $4 million for road work.

Mayor Morris Trudeau wasn’t available to comment.
