It’s a heart-wrenching photograph: a mounted patrol officer holding a police horse who had been hit by a truck.
He held her until her last breath.
The Houston Police Department announced the death of Charlotte last week, saying she was in the line of duty when she was involved in a motor vehicle accident.
Animal Justice League, an animal rescue organization in Houston, wrote that Charlotte had been spooked by a passing cement truck. She bucked her rider, Officer D. Herrejon, and ran off. She was hit by a truck.
The police are investigating, but said “the driver of the vehicle is not believed to be at fault.”
Houston police said Charlotte “loved her job” and had served on the force for four years.
“She passed her evaluation period with flying colors and was working the streets of downtown Houston within a short time of being started under the saddle,” they wrote.
