Vaudreuil limits charity bins to 20

VAUDREUIL-DORION – Volunteers at L’Actuel are busy sorting donations at this time of year.

The Vaudreuil organization has been helping those who are vulnerable for over 32 years.

L’Actuel’s executive director told Global News the organization mainly serves people who are isolated, seniors, and those who struggle financially.

The organization receives donations mainly through its charity bins.

L’Actuel has four sites spread across Vaudreuil and now, the city is making sure legitimate bins like these ones are the only ones standing.

“We decided last year to have a bylaw, with a regulation that makes people come here, fill a form so we know where they are from, if they are official for charity and what they’re going to do with the money or the clothes,” Vaudreuil Mayor Guy Pilon said.

Vaudreuil has now identified three registered organizations who are allowed to have bins: L’Actuel, Le Support and Diabetes Quebec.

At the moment, the three charities have a total of 10 bins across Vaudreuil, but the mayor said there will never be more than 20 in the city.

“The main issue is that there will never be more than 20 bins in the city of Vaudreuil-Dorion, because we don’t want it to become part of the image of the town,” said Pilon.

Vaudreuil is just the latest city to crack down on charity bins.

Laval announced last week it would only allow certain groups to collect donations.

L’Actuel hopes more cities will follow in its footsteps so that organizations like it can continue to help residents in need.
