Runners in Santa suits invade Mount Royal Park

MONTREAL – If you were on Mount Royal Saturday morning, you may have been overrun — literally — by a crowd of Santa’s big and small, and even a few elves.

That’s because the Salvation Army held its annual Santa Shuffle, a 5-km run to raise funds for those in need.

Sylvain Picard, sporting a Santa tuque, told Global News he was running for the homeless.

“I work with them at the CLSC,” he said. “I know they need lots of things and they need to know we are thinking of them.”

According to organizers, 1,300 runners took part in this year’s event.

Esteban Bongiovanni with the Salvation Army says the run isn’t only about providing material support for the disadvantaged but also making the holiday season a little bit brighter.

“The race will allow us to provide joy, hope and dignity during the Christmas season,” he said in a written statement.
