Man charged in Calgary barber shop shooting death

CALGARY – Police have laid charges in the shooting death of a man at a southeast barber shop last month.

It happened in the 5100 block of 20 Avenue S.E. on Saturday, Nov. 14.

Police said a man entered the shop at around 5 p.m. and entered into a quick conversation with the victim before shooting him. Khalid El-Ajami was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Friday, police announced Redear Kadir-Shahwan had been charged with first-degree murder in connection to the death.

Investigators believe the attack was targeted, and sparked over an “ongoing dispute over drugs.” Police described the incident as “gang-like activity” but said who is involved and how they’re aligned “still remains a mystery.”

Kadir-Shahwan, who is 22, also faces a charge of attempted murder in a shooting last January.

Police say two men walked out of a convenience store and were nearly hit by a passing vehicle.

After a brief verbal exchange, one of the pedestrians was shot.
