KELOWNA — Kelowna fire crews prevented an early morning fire from spreading to an adjacent building Monday morning.

Platoon Captain Eric Simpson says he believes the fire, which burned through what may have been a temporary homeless shelter, was accidentally sparked by a candle.

It happened shortly before 7 a.m. behind a commercial building in the 400 block of Leon Ave.

“Crews knocked it down quickly,” says Simpson. “The fire scorched the outside of the building but there was no extension into the building.”

Simpson says the supposed makeshift homeless shelter was made up of several wooden pallets.

He says no one was at the scene when crews arrived and no one was hurt in the incident.
