Bright Nights in Stanley Park back on track after theft

With a new train station and a Nutracker theme, the Bright Nights in Stanley Park is set to open for the 18th year.

The event, which raises money for the BC Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund, suffered a major setback earlier this month when thieves made off with $7,000 in cables.

“It’s a kick in the head,” said Ray Boucher, VP of the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund. “Right away, you’re thinking now we’ve got to get this back together, up and running.”

Fortunately, a generous donor came forward and the event is back on track.

Organizers are hoping to raise $450,000 to put towards a new burn centre. The building will serve as a home for burn survivors while undergoing treatment in Vancouver.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“It’s something like home nearby,” said burn survivor Don Schwartz. “Without that and the support of those people, the healing just doesn’t happen.”

The $13-million project is believed to be the first of its kind in North America. It’s a longtime dream for firefighters and they are thanking the public for making it possible.

“Every year we seem to bring in more money than we did the year before,” said Boucher. “With the economy the way it is, I’m surprised people are so generous, just to keep on giving and giving. It’s rewarding.”
