This week on Focus Montreal: Nov. 21

MONTREAL — Focus Montreal introduces Montrealers to people who are shaping our community, bringing their stories into focus.

It airs on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 7:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and at midnight.

Take a look at who we’re meeting this week on Focus Montreal:

West Island Family Resource Center

Health care workers, civil servants and teachers walked off the job this week, the latest in a series of rotating strikes throughout the province over contract negotiations.

For now, there will be no more strike days. The union has agreed to hold off to continue negotiations.

But this week’s protests meant Montreal area students had cancelled classes, and for them it’s not just a day off.

Carrie Goldberg, from the West Island Family Resource Center, discusses the impact the strikes are having on students.

NDG Senior Citizens’ Council

Issues facing seniors are not always part of our every discourse. Often the problems they grapple with are  excluded from larger initiatives but the NDG Senior Citizens’ Council (NDGSCC) is determined to bridge that gap.

The council is working to address the social isolation felt by low-income seniors over the age of 50.

They provide invaluable services to those struggling with housing, health services and finances.

The organization also provides a sense of community where seniors can interact with peers in a motivating and inspirational way.

Sheri McLeod, executive director of the NDGSCC, explains how the council works to help seniors.

Liberal MNA Dominque Anglade

The recently elected MNAs were sworn in in the National Assembly this week. Liberals Dominique Anglade, Monique Sauve and Paul Busque took the oath to serve, as did Parti Quebecois MNA Martin Ouellet.

The four were elected in the last provincial byelection on November 9.

Angalde has a unique history that led her to become an MNA.
