Police identify murder victim gunned down in Calgary barber shop

CALGARY- A murder victim gunned down in a Calgary barber shop was identified Friday.

Thirty-year-old Khaled El-Ajami is one of the latest victims of the city’s recent gun violence.

Police are still looking for the man they believe is responsible, and described him as in his 20s with a heavy build. He was last seen wearing a black hoodie and grey pants. Police said they are reviewing CCTV video which showed someone driving him from the scene in a silver SUV.

The fatal shooting happened around 5 p.m. last Saturday in the 5100 block of 20 Avenue S.E.

Police said the suspect had a brief conversation with the customer inside the shop, before pulling out a gun and shooting him.

Business owners told Global News the parking lot was full of people at the time. Police said it was fortunate nobody else was injured.

“The potential for someone to be injured in this incident was great,” said Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus. “We are concerned anytime, especially when a passerby [likelihood] to be injured is high. In this case, there were over 60 people in the immediate area.”

Police said they knew the victim, and believe he was targeted because of an ongoing gang dispute over drugs. Investigators are encouraging anyone with information to contact police, and have narrowed down witnesses to about a dozen for follow-up interviews. They don’t believe any of the witnesses were involved in the crime.

“There are a number of reasons why people don’t come forward,” Andrus said. “Either they’re afraid or there’s a misguided loyalty or they feel we already have the information or they feel their information is insignificant…let us make that decision.”

El-Ajami’s death is Calgary’s 29th homicide of the year.
