WINNIPEG — It was a welcome home that carried extra emotion. Family and friends were relieved as seven students and two teachers from Vincent Massey High School stepped off a plane from Paris, just three days after the deadly terror attacks.

“We were at the Eiffel Tower when everything happened. Once we figured it out we went back to our hotel and stayed there,” Ashley Derkson, one of the students said.

The students were on an annual exchange and arrived in Paris on November 5th. They were scheduled to fly back Monday. The group was at a safe enough distance from where the horrific attacks happened, but not far enough to avoid the chaos that the country is going through.

“The whole city was on lockdown after that, so we couldn’t really do anything there,” Derkson said.

Pembina Trail’s superintendent said the teachers alerted staff back home that they were out of harms way.

“We were quickly comforted with the knowledge that the students were safe and the teachers were safe,” Ted Franson said.

The students will be returning to class this week.
