Vincent Massey Trojans are high school football champions

WINNIPEG – The Vincent Massey Trojans played a nearly flawless game in defeating the previously unbeaten St. Paul’s Crusaders to claim the ANAVETS Bowl for the “AAA” high school football championship. The Trojans handed the Crusaders their first loss of the season 22-12 on Friday at Investors Group Field.

The Trojans took a nine point lead into the half and the defense shut down the Crusaders right up until the final minutes to win their first varsity football title in school history.  The varsity football program is only in it’s seventh season at Vincent Massey.

“It’s absolutely phenomenal. I’m so proud.” Trojans head coach Kelsey McKay said. “We had to play perfect. St. Paul’s is such a…they are the benchmark program and they still are. They don’t beat themselves and we had to play perfect to beat them.”

Jeremy Gillis and Liam Casey scored touchdowns for the Trojans in the victory.

“It just feels so amazing to win this championship finally, to cement the Trojans as a team.” Trojans quarterback Andre Dueck said.

In the division two championship game Sturgeon Heights defeated the Steinbach Sabres 17-10 to claim their first title since 2008.
