WEST KELOWNA – A man is in custody on numerous charges stemming from a home invasion style robbery involving an 85-year-old woman.
On October 25th at about 2:40 a.m., a masked intruder entered the woman’s Butt Road residence in West Kelowna through a kitchen window.
Police say he attacked the woman in her bedroom in “vicious” struggle that lasted almost 20 minutes during which the suspect pulled the phone from the wall and tried to restrain and gag his victim.
She suffered minor injuries.
The man demanded pain medications, jewellery and money, fleeing with credit cards and $200.
A police dog followed a scent trail to the area of the 3300 block of Village Green Way.
“The on-going police investigation revealed that the suspect later used the victim’s credit cards at various West Kelowna stores,” says RCMP Cst. Jesse O’Donaghey in a news release. “Upon review of the business’ video surveillance footage, investigators were able to positively identify the suspect as 24-year-old Benjamin Duane Barnhart of West Kelowna.”
O’Donaghey says several items belonging to the woman were found during a subsequent search of Barnhart’s residence.
He has a court appearance Monday on charges including break and enter, forcible confinement and possessing stolen property and methamphetamine.
