HALIFAX – No need to pay for parking in these spots, if you’re on a bicycle that is.

The Halifax Cycling Coalition has installed 16 new on-street parking spaces for cyclists on Charles Street, just in front of evVie and close to other popular food stops Lion and Bright, Smith’s Bakery and Local Source.

Eight posts, which can hold two bikes each, have been installed in what was previously a no parking zone.

The installation is a pilot project that will go until November 15, and then will return in April for the entire summer.

A post on the Halifax Cycling Coalition website says in the future, the bike parking spots could be extended further into spaces that are currently reserved for cars.

One car parking spot has space for ten bicycle parking posts.

The project cost about $3,000, and came from a $7,107 grant from District 8 Capital Fund.

The coalition says money left over from the grant will either go into installing more bicycle parking posts in the spring or will be returned to the capital fund.
