CALGARY – It’s not very often you get your big break when you’re in your 80s, but that’s exactly what’s happening for one Calgarian this week.

Eighty-two-year-old Sheila Brinsmead is setting up for the first-ever exhibition of her art.

It’s an opportunity she never imagined she’d have.

Brinsmead enjoyed studying art as a teen, but then she started raising a family.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

With her hands full raising seven children, she had to put her brush aside.

“It was tough to squeeze it in,” said Brinsmead.

But with the support of her daughter Mary-Leigh Doyle, also an artist, Brinsmead has rediscovered her love of art.

An exhibit featuring 23 of her creations opens Friday, running until Nov. 28 at Calgary’s Framed on Fifth gallery.

Brinsmead hopes it will encourage others to develop their talents.

“You get some of the older people, they’ll say, ‘I always thought maybe I’d like to try.’ So, it’s your time to try.”

“I’m extremely proud of my mother,” said Doyle. “She’s the coolest little old lady I know.”
