Alberta Wildrose party to allow free votes on all bills, chop MLA salaries

EDMONTON – Alberta’s Wildrose Party is promising free votes in the legislature on all bills and a steep rollback in cabinet salaries if it becomes government in the April 23 election.

Leader Danielle Smith says cabinet salaries will be reduced 30 per cent, wiping out the hike the Progressive Conservative cabinet gave itself after the 2008 election.

Smith says her party would also set fixed election dates and allow for citizens to recall their elected representatives.

The party would also broaden access to freedom of information legislation by reversing the onus on information requests.

Smith says it would no longer be the job of citizens to say why they need the information, but the responsibility of government to show why the information should be withheld.

Smith is also promising whisteblower legislation.
