Earth is currently entering a stream of debris leftover from a passing comet. As the debris enters our atmosphere, they burn up, and appear as streaks of light — meteors. Larger pieces of debris can produce intense meteors, resulting in a brightness that would outshine a full moon, as was the case in the Thailand meteor.
We experience meteor showers such as this one — the Taurid meteor shower — almost every month. Though the Taurids don’t typically produce a lot of meteors or bright ones, it was anticipated that this year would be more impressive.
