RCMP investigate suspicious house fire in Lake Country

LAKE COUNTRY — Police are investigating a suspicious fire at a Lake Country home in the 3100 block of Beaver Lake Road.

Fire crews were called around 10 o’clock on Monday morning. The RCMP says one person has been arrested but few details are being provided about what happened.

Lake Country resident, Dean Buse, was driving by the home at the time and saw a middle aged woman with a bloody hand frantically waving and screaming.

He and another passerby stopped to help.

“The lady was saying she needed the police, ambulance, fire department and all that, and that her ex-husband was trying to light the house on fire and drag her back into the house,” says Buse.

Buse stayed with the woman while the other witness held the alleged arsonist until police arrived on scene.

The man was taken from the scene in the back of a cop car, but police won’t confirm if he’s accused of starting the fire. RCMP also won’t say if there was a domestic dispute.

“I can’t speak to details,” says Kelowna RCMP Cpl. Joe Duncan. “Those details will come out when and if a charge is laid by crown.”

Lake Country fire chief Steve Windsor says the fire started in the basement of the house. There was significant damage to the bottom floor, but crews managed to stop the flames from spreading.

“The people were renting, and as I understand don’t have contents insurance,” says Windsor.

There is smoke damage to the remainder of the home.

A woman was reported to have a bloody hand, but it is unknown how her injuries came to be. No one else was hurt in the incident.

The RCMP is taking the lead on this investigation.
