Pay may be docked for Ontario elementary teachers after deal date passes

TORONTO – The Nov. 1 date set by Premier Kathleen Wynne for Ontario elementary teachers to end their work-to-rule action and reach a labour agreement or face a possible dock in pay has come and gone.

Wynne issued the ultimatum on Oct. 23 that if they didn’t, the government would authorize school boards to dock teachers’ pay after five days’ notice.

The teachers have been protesting the lack of progress in contract talks by not participating in such things as field trips, school fundraising projects and the collection and distribution of paperwork.

A statement released from Education Minister Liz Sandals said negotiations are ongoing with all parties and an update is expected for later today.

Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario president Sam Hammond said on Oct. 23 his members won’t respond to threats.

Despite the ongoing labour battle, the province said it will not impose contracts on teachers.
