TORONTO – The beloved kids tale “The Hockey Sweater” is going to the symphony.
The Toronto Symphony Orchestra says it’s offering up a musical take on the classic Canuck story on May 12.
The world premiere of “The Hockey Sweater” will be hosted by famed Montreal Canadiens goaltender Ken Dryden and narrated by the original author himself, Roch Carrier.
The musical piece is by Dora Award-winning composer Abigail Richardson.
Carrier’s “The Hockey Sweater” was first published in French in 1979. It’s about a boy who outgrows his beloved Canadiens sweater.
It was turned into an award-winning animated short by the National Film Board of Canada in 1980.
The new musical incarnation was jointly commissioned by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.
“The Hockey Sweater” makes its symphonic debut the day before Carrier celebrates his 75th birthday.
It’s part of an all-Canadian program set to include André Jutras’ “Suite folklorique,” John Estacio’s “Borealis” and Doris Clayman’s “Hockey Night in Canada.”
