Okanagan Sun “stoked” to take on Vancouver Island Raiders for Cullen Cup

Okanagan Sun Coach Shane Beatty says his team is well prepared for the Cullen Cup in Kelowna, Sunday, Oct. 25. Bryon McLuckie/ Global Okanagan

KELOWNA, B.C. – After destroying the Kamloops Bronco’s 75-7 Sunday, the Okanagan Sun of the B.C. Football Conference (BCFC) are preparing to take on a rival team that has trumped them at five previous championship meetups.

The Vancouver Island Raiders played the Sun in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010 and won every time.

About 70 potential players came out to Thursday night’s ‘helmet and shoulder pad’ practice at the Kelowna Apple Bowl.

Only 40 will end up on the roster for Sunday’s match.

Coach Shane Beatty says for his team, the final game is about making memories.

“We’re firm believers in our group, our team and our organization,” says Beatty. “The kids are well prepared, they’ve prepared themselves mentally.”

“Right now, these kids are stoked,” he adds about how the team feels going into Sunday’s game. “They’re jacked up and ready to play Sunday at 1 o’clock.”

The winner will go on to play the team that wins the Prairie Football Conference. The Canadian Bowl takes place Nov. 8 and 9.
