WINNIPEG – Jay Harrison is back in the American Hockey League for the first time in more than five years. But with more than 400 AHL games under his belt, he didn’t miss a beat as he scored two of the Moose five goals in their two weekend losses to the Toronto Marlies.

Harrison, 32, is in his 14th professional season and his veteran experience might be the most important asset he brings to the table for the Moose.

“You can’t put a value on that.” Moose head coach Keith McCambridge said. “For whatever period of time we’re going to have Jay here, the chance for those young defensemen on the back end to see how an NHL defenseman plays, the way he controls his gaps, the intensity he brings, the physicality, how he moves pucks. And not only in the games but in practices too. His practice habits, that’s a very good learning tool for those guys to watch.”

With injuries just a part of the game Harrison will probably be back with the Jets sooner rather than later. But in the meantime he’ll be looked at to help guide the Jets defensemen of the future.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“I don’t like to say I’m in a mentor role.” Harrison said. “I think that naturally happens over the course of a career. I’ve been a professional for 14 years. There are things that I suppose could translate to the young guys, but I hope they get those from watching me as opposed to me sitting back and you know pontificating to them and telling them what to do.”

And that means leading by example.

“Hopefully if some of my habits that have lasted and allowed me to play this long can rub off, that’s a fantastic thing.” Harrison said.

Harrison began the season paired with 20-year-old Jan Kostalek from the Czech Republic as his defensive partner.

“He giving me all the time like tips, how to do stuff.” Kostalek said. “I’m really happy about it. He talk to me a lot on the ice and off the ice so he’s kinda trying to help me a lot.”

But knowing the phone call to go back up to the Jets could be just around the corner, Harrison can’t just worry about everyone else.

“Ultimately I’m focused on preparing to play my game as well.” said Harrison. “I certainly think that I’m capable to play at that level again. Obviously my main goal is still in front of me and on the horizon, so I haven’t by any means given up.”

The Moose will play their home opener at MTS Centre on Thursday against the Ontario Reign.
