Parents of man declared “incompetent” worried that he’s being discharged from care facility

NEW GLASGOW, NS – Darrell and Brenda Webb got some news this week they were not expecting. Their son Landon is being discharged from a residential care facility in the Valley.

“It was upsetting to say the least and now we’re left scrambling trying to figure out where he will have a home,” Brenda Webb said Friday.

Landon has epilepsy, anxiety disorder, heart disease and asthma. The 25-year-old also has an intellectual disorder, meaning he functions at a level of a 10 to 12-year-old.

“He is declared as an incompetent person,” Brenda told Global News. “He can’t make judgements. He needs to have supervision.”

Landon has been living at the Kings Regional Rehabilitation Facility in Waterville for almost two years. The Webbs have been trying to get him into a small option home for more than 4 years, with no luck.

The couple have no idea where their son will be going once he is released or who will care for him.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“He can’t come home. We’ve been there and done that before and no,” Darrell Webb said, speaking about the challenges of caring for his son.”That’s why we had to put him in an institution to give him one on one care.”

The Department of Community Services would not speak to Landon Webb’s situation. A spokesperson says there are a number of reasons why someone would be moved out of a placement, including that it may not work for the individual anymore.

“There always is a consideration when words are used around discharge”, said Lorna MacPherson of the Department of Community Services.”It is with the plan that there will be an option for the individual and the family to consider. They are not just put out on the street.”

The Webbs don’t understand why their son is being discharged and only have one wish for him: “(that) he has a home like all other people because he deserves that. He deserves to have the care he needs,” Brenda told Global News.

At this point, there is no indication what will happen to Landon Webb when he is released next Wednesday. His family says they will continue to work with the government and hopefully find a solution for their son.
