CALGARY – In a close race, Liberal Darshan Kang has taken the riding of Calgary Skyview from the Conservatives.

“This is the first Liberal riding in Calgary since 1968,” said political analyst Janet Brown. “Ironically, Pierre Elliott Trudeau was prime minister at the time.”
Calgary Skyview had been considered the Liberal Party’s best shot at stealing a riding in Calgary, since it had the strongest support of any riding in the last election. Kang had represented Calgary-McCall provincially from 2008 to 2015, and did not re-offer provincially in order to campaign for a federal seat. Conservative MP Devinder Shory had represented the former riding of Calgary Northeast since 2008 and had been seeking re-election.
Kang caused a stir in early October after he was asked to leave a Calgary polling station. Both his campaign manager and the Liberal Party said despite a photo of him shaking hands with people near the polls, Kang was not at the advanced polling station to campaign.

Calgary Skyview is the most diverse of the city’s ten ridings, with 43.15 per cent immigrant population according to the 2011 National Household Survey.
The area was previously represented by Conservative MP Art Hanger from 1993-2008.
