Alberta lax on chasing down back taxes from corporate deadbeats: auditor

EDMONTON – Alberta’s auditor general says the province is falling down on the job when it comes to collecting back taxes from corporate deadbeats.

Merwan Saher says in his latest report that some corporations have unpaid tax bills going back eight years. And he says the province is not using the tools at its disposal to make them pay up.

He did not provide numbers, but said outstanding tax bills are “significant.”

The NDP government increased the corporate tax rate to 12 per cent from 10 per cent after it won the election last spring.

The taxes are expected to bring in almost $5 billion to the treasury this year at a time when Alberta is facing a multi-billion-dollar deficit due largely to low oil prices.
