ANTIGONISH, NS – The Nova Scotia Health Authority is investigating a suspected case of tuberculosis at St. Francis Xavier University.
The authority says the case involves a student in Antigonish and it is following up with anyone who may have been in close contact with that person.
In a statement, the authority says there is minimal risk to staff and students.
That’s because the disease is spread after a prolonged period of close contact with an infected person.
Tuberculosis typically attacks the lungs but can affect any part of the body with symptoms including weakness, fever and coughing.
It is spread from person to person through bacteria in the air.
