Liberals poised to win first seats in Alberta since 2006: poll

CALGARY – A new poll suggests the Liberals could make a breakthrough in Alberta during the upcoming federal election.

The poll from Mainstreet Technologies, released on Monday, found the Conservative party leading in support throughout Alberta – but a tight three-way race brewing in Edmonton, where the Liberals placed second.

The poll asked over 3,000 Albertans who they would vote for if the federal election were held today.

Among all voters, both decided and undecided, 56 per cent said they supported the Conservatives.

In Edmonton, however, only 34 per cent of respondents pledged their support to the Conservatives, with 26 per cent backing the Liberals and 21 per cent saying they’d vote for the NDP.

“The Liberal Party of Canada has not held a seat in Alberta since the 2006 election when the Conservatives came to office,” said president of Mainstreet Research Quito Maggi. “That shutout in Alberta appears to be ending with Liberals poised to elect a number of MPs on October 19th in both Edmonton and Calgary.”

Meanwhile, the poll also showed a slight shift in provincial politics, with 35 per cent of respondents saying that if a provincial election were held today, they would vote for the Wildrose and not the governing NDP.

“This change in sentiment may be more a reflection of the current federal election and the state of the economy and the energy sector where Alberta heavily relies for jobs and growth,” said Maggi.

The Mainstreet/Postmedia poll used Interactive Voice Response (IVR) technology to survey 3,258 Albertans on October 1, 2015, with a combination of land lines and cellular phones.
