Hearing the beep where you sleep: Fire Prevention week

Fire investigators, Honey and her handler Brad Mcdonald visit residents in Acadia Sunday as part of Fire Prevention Week. Doug Vaessen, Global News
CALGARY – Honey, the canine investigator, joined fire fighters Sunday in reminding Calgarians about fire safety.
Three out of 10 house fires in Calgary last year happened in homes without a working smoke detector, which is why fire crews are going door to door in Acadia Sunday, helping residents check their alarms.
Even hardwired smoke detectors need to be replaced every 10 years. Batteries should be checked once a month and replaced once a year.
Honey has been on the job for three years and has investigated hundreds of fires.
She can identify 200 different accelerants that cause fires.

“I would say at this point she is a pro. Her percentages are double the national average of collecting fire samples at a fire scene,” says Brad McDonald, fire investigator and Honey’s handler.
