Crews battle fire at large apartment building in Surrey

Some families have lost everything they own after an early morning fire in Surrey.

The building, near King George Boulevard and 108 Avenue, is heavily damaged and about 68 people have been displaced.

Some residents had to be rescued off their balconies to escape the flames. One of the residents says people started banging on her door at about 5:30 a.m., saying there was a fire and it was not a drill.

“There was no smoke in our home, but as soon as you opened the door you could smell the smoke, and by the time they came to get the guys out in wheelchairs, there was a lot of smoke in the hall,” she says.

The cause of the fire is not known at this time.
