Nearly 300-year-old painting stolen by Nazis found in Ohio couple’s home

A nearly 300-year-old painting stolen by the Nazis in Poland during the second world war has been found in the home of an Ohio couple.

John and Janis Bobb told WBNS News that they received a call from the FBI who said, “I think there’s a possibility that you might have in your collection, in your ownership, a painting that might have been looted from Poland.”

The couple purchased the art work in 1990 and it had been hanging on their wall as part of their art collection ever since.

According to the FBI, the painting was brought to the U.S. by a serviceman and was later sold to art collectors in central Ohio.

The Bobbs met with agents and the Polish Ministry of Cultural and National Heritage last week who authenticated the painting. The Bobbs willingly handed over the piece.

“That’s where it should be, it’s been gone since 1939,” John Bobb said.

The Bobbs have been invited to Poland for the presentation and re-dedication of the painting at the National Museum in Warsaw.
