A touching public service announcement about one dog’s struggle on the streets of India has been watched more than 600,000 times at this writing, and shows the animal’s recovery.
Animal Aid Unlimited India said it found and captured a very sick, stray dog resting at the side of a road.
“He was suffering from severe mange and had completely given up hope,” the organization explained in the video’s description.
The PSA goes on to show the early stages of treatment including a reintroduction to something many of us can take for granted — physical contact.
The dog eventually appears with a layer of fresh, new fur after nearly two months of treatment.
“This is too much love for me, I can’t handle it,” one of the many YouTube comments read.
Animal Aid Unlimited is a charitable organization that is based in Udaipur, Rajasthan, India. It claims to have rescued “more than 45,000 injured or ill dogs, cows, donkeys, birds and cats to date.”
Co-founder Claire Abrams told Global News on Monday that the charity only creates videos for its most severe cases to help create awareness and ask for donations. Most animals it receives have minor cases of injury or mange. Funds raised help cover the costs of ‘direct animal care’ entailing medicine, food and about 50 caregivers on staff.

The facility she helps run operates very similar to a wildlife rescue operation. It has about 200 permanent residents, on any given day, while an additional 200 temporary residents are treated, allowed to recover and are eventually returned to their original environments.
Abrams says the unnamed pooch in the viral PSA has already returned home to his caregiver, who wasn’t necessarily at fault for the dog’s case of mange. The owner hadn’t seen the dog in some time — a typical scenario in that region.
