CALGARY — A pregnant woman came within centimetres of being run down by a car – inside her own home.

At around 3 p.m. Wednesday, the driver of a white Toyota sedan lost control and crashed through the front window of a townhome in the 4400 block of Memorial Drive S.E.

Calgary Fire Department officials said the victim, who is eight months pregnant, was sitting in her living room at the time.

When the vehicle came to a stop, it missed her by only a couple of feet.

“They came very close to being struck — thankfully, no injuries there,” said Carol Henke with the Calgary Fire Department. “And some slight injuries to the driver of the vehicle.”

The woman’s young son was also in the room when the car struck, but he was further away.

Fire officials said the crash appeared to be accidental, and police are investigating.

The damage to the home is significant, and it is likely structurally unsafe.

“I don’t believe they will be going in to resume living there anytime soon — it will need extensive repairs to the room where the damage occurred,” said Henke.
