One dead following stabbing incident at care home in Agassiz

B.C.’s police watchdog is investigating a stabbing incident at a residential care home in Agassiz.

Officers responded to reports of an incident at the Cheam Village Care Home this morning. It is a residential care retirement home with 68 beds.

Police were called at 6:15 a.m. to the facility in the 1500-block of MacKay Crescent after reports a man was holding a sharp object near his stomach, which was believed to be a knife.

The elderly man appeared to be in distress and he was eventually subdued and taken into custody. As the man appeared to have self-inflicted injuries, the BC Ambulance Service was called; however, the man passed away in the ambulance.

A RCMP officer was injured when the man was subdued. They have now been treated and released from hospital.

The BC Coroner and the Independent Investigations Office are now involved.
