Vancouver tourism boom shows no signs of slowing down

Summer may be coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean an end to Vancouver’s tourism boom.

The city was buzzing Tuesday night with almost every hotel in the downtown core booked solid thanks to a couple of cruise ships docking near Canada Place, a major conference and an AC/DC concert at BC Place. Those events have made it near impossible to get a hotel room in the city.

With higher demand comes higher rates. The best price at the Marriott Pinnacle is $590 a night. The rate at the Pinnacle Hotel Harbourfront is $280 per night but that’s with two double beds. And a night at the Coast Coal Harbour will cost $470. Those rates are for Wednesday as all their rooms are fully booked on a Tuesday night.

“If someone really needs a room, I hope they certainly find one,” said Craig Norris-Jones, GM of Pan Pacific Vancouver Hotel. “It will probably be $300 to $500 for a room tonight.”

The low loonie has contributed to a banner year for tourism in B.C.

With several new records set over the summer, the lure of the West Coast is helping partially offset the slumping energy sector. Minister of Tourism Shirley Bond said tourism generates nearly $14 billion annually.
