WATCH ABOVE: An RCMP officer is in hospital and a P.E.I. man in custody after a bizarre incident on the Confederation Bridge. Global’s Brion Robinson reports.
MONCTON – An RCMP officer from PEI is in hospital after being dragged by a vehicle along the Confederation Bridge this morning.
Sgt. Leanne Butler said two officers were responding to a call of a man possibly wanting to jump off the bridge when the incident occurred.
The initial call came in at 5:45 a.m., and a bridge employee was able to intercept the 28-year-old man and convince him to get into a bridge vehicle before RCMP got there.
When RCMP arrived on scene, the employee exited the vehicle to speak with them.
Then, one officer approached the vehicle to speak with the individual.
At that point, the man slid over to the driver’s seat and drove off in the direction of New Brunswick, Sgt. Butler said, striking the officer and dragging him “a considerable distance.”
The RCMP officer eventually became free, and the man continued driving, colliding with a bridge vehicle and another vehicle.
The officer who was hit suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Confederation Bridge re-opened at 10:15 a.m.
Accused man faces seven charges
The man was formally charged by RCMP Tuesday afternoon.
Scott Alexander MacNally of Borden-Carleton, P.E.I. was charged with bring criminally negligent in the operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.
He was also charged with flight from police, theft of a vehicle, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and three additional counts of causing damage to motor vehicles.
McNally remains in custody until his next court appearance scheduled for September 21st.
The investigation continues.
