CALGARY – Calgarians saw soggy wet weather throughout the city on Friday, and even some August snow.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for Calgary just before 5 a.m., warning of heavy rain which won’t end until the evening.

In addition to the rain, Environment Canada said strong northerly winds will develop with gusts from 60 to 80 km/h.

Global News Meteorologist Jordan Witzel expects some 20 mm of rain to fall in Calgary by the end of the day.

The anticipated rainfall wasn’t enough to prompt Environment Canada to issue a rainfall warning, which Witzel says is because Calgary will remain on the lower end of rainfall amounts for the region.

“A rainfall warning would only be issued if amounts in excess of 50 mm were expected to fall in 24 hours or less, and that is not the case. However, even 20 mm from one weather system is a little out of the ordinary for Calgary this time of year.”

“It’s not very often we end August with this much moisture in southern Alberta.”

Frost is possible in Calgary on Friday night, as a ridge of high pressure moves in and skies clear. The overnight low is expected to be only 3°C.

Meanwhile, the wet weather may be at least partially to blame for a number of crashes in Calgary on Friday.

Police say 44 collisions were reported between midnight and 12 p.m., including five involving injuries.
