N.L. moose cull could jeopardize endanger animals: outfitter

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – An outfitter says the Newfoundland and Labrador government could be jeopardizing the province’s moose herd.

Rollie Wheeler says plans to increase the number of moose licences and to extend the hunting season in the province could endanger the animals.

Wheeler says the government is reacting to concerns about the number of moose-vehicle collisions on the island.

But he says the province should concentrate on increasing licences in high-traffic areas and along highways, rather than extending the season.

Otherwise, he says it is in danger of decimating the herd.

He says the George River caribou herd once numbered three quarters of a million animals and is now down to just 70- or 80-thousand in just a few years.
