TORONTO – The battle over the future of Toronto’s transit continues as crowds fill town hall meetings and the Mayor continues to fight for subways.
The question of subways or light rail transit could come to a head at City Council again during the scheduled March meeting? as councillors are convene again to vote on the issue.
On Tuesday, TTC Chair Karen Stintz and City Councillor Josh Matlow held a town hall meeting at North Toronto Community Centre to discuss Toronto’s transit plans with engaged citizens.
With the distinct purpose of informing the crowd why the city’s light rail transit plan is – allegedly – better than building subways, the presentation drew the ire from some members of the crowd who yelled, “liar, liar,” during the presentation.
“We only have limited resources, the province has committed $8.4 billion, feds have committed $333 million, and the challenge to council is how do we best service the citizens that don’t benefit from rapid transit,” Stintz said.
The controversy over Light Rail Transit came to blows in February when Mayor Rob Ford lost a crucial transit battle as the majority of City council voted in favour of light-trail transit.
Since then, both sides of the argument have been caught in a public relations war.
On Sunday, the public relations battle continued on the airwaves as Mayor Ford and his brother, Councillor Doug Ford reinforced their support of subways on their new radio show, ‘The City.’
“I’m going to do what taxpayers want me to do, obviously it might disagree with your views, your views are for light rapid transit, I want to do what I was elected to do and that is build subways,” Mayor Ford said during the NewsTalk 1010 radio show.
