Texas mother’s DUI arrest leads to brain tumour discovery

A Texas mother was arrested for a DUI after losing control of her vehicle last month. Little did she know that crash would lead to the discovery of a tumour.

Julie Cunningham, who is a mother of four, spent a night in jail after she crashed into a fire hydrant on July 31. Police made her take a breathalyzer test where she blew a zero point zero.

After Cunningham’s brother picked her up the next day, he noticed something was wrong with his sister. She was slurring her words, couldn’t remember the accident and could barely move.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“Julie doesn’t remember the accident, she doesn’t remember the police being involved, she doesn’t remember being in jail. Which is OK, for right now, it’s one piece of trauma she doesn’t need to be thinking about,” said Lynda Halvorson, Cunningham’s mother to WFAA.

A visit to the hospital lead to the discovery of a non-cancerous tumour that was the size of a lemon in Cunningham’s brain.

“It’s an interesting way to find out about a brain tumour,” said Halvorson.

“She’s a tough girl. I just wanna bring her home soon,” she added.

Cunningham has had surgery and is now recovering in hospital.
