Five-year-old Hailey Dawson had a single goal on Monday night at the baseball game between the Orioles and Oakland Athletics: to throw the first pitch with her new 3D-printed hand.
Dawson was born with a rare birth defect called Poland Syndrome, the underdevelopment or absence of muscle on one side of the body. In this case, Dawson’s right hand is affected.
The young girl from Las Vegas was given a robotic hand by engineering students from the University of Nevada who were inspired by Dawson’s condition, giving her the opportunity to throw a baseball out to her favourite player, Manny Machado.
