TORONTO — For a humble city councillor, Norm Kelly has an enormous fan base; the newly minted social media star has now amassed over 100,000 followers on Twitter

Kelly says when he created his account, he made a cautious decision to not use Twitter as a diary.

“Some people do that, ‘this is what I am doing right now, this is what I’m doing in a few minutes time,'” he said. “I wouldn’t use it as an extension of my political life, it’s just designed for me to have fun.”

Even Twitter Canada is recognizing Kelly’s growing following. They released this Tweet congratulating Kelly on his 100,000 followers.

In fact, he’s now got more followers than constituents; his Ward 40, Scarborough-Agincourt has just over 62,000 residents, according to the most recent census data.

The 74-year old councillor gained massive amounts of recognition after becoming an unofficial crew member of Canadian rapper Drake.

“To have – out of the blue, unwarranted – a grenade tossed at him by a guy from Philadelphia, I thought well, it’s like family,” Kelly said. I can tease my brother – and I did in my tweets – but you can’t.”

Kelly tweeted today that he was planning on seeing the new movie Straight Outta Compton.

“I’ve been introduced to the hip hop/rap culture over the last few weeks and I’ve done some reading and I’ve also had tweets coming in saying ‘are you going to see it?'” he said.
