WWII medal collection stolen from Hawkwood home

CALGARY – Police are hoping to locate a Calgary man’s World War II medal collection, which was stolen from a home in the community of Hawkwood last month.

The medals were taken from a house in the 400 block of Hawkford Way N.W. between 2:45 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on July 21.

A number of other items, including jewelry, watches and silverware, were also taken.

The medals belong to Pat Haritgan’s father Dan, who was a soldier with the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion and jumped in a D-Day raid in 1944.

“He was fighting along with his comrades, eventually injured and sent back to England where he recovered,” said Pat. “He eventually jumped with the the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion again, crossing into Germany.”
