Special fund set up for Okanagan fire victims

KELOWNA — The Red Cross has set up a special fund for those who have been affected by the wildfires in Rock Creek and Oliver.

There are two wildfires burning in the Oliver area.  The Wilson Mountain Road fire is only one kilometre north of Oliver and is estimated at 317 hectares. It is 70 per cent contained. The Testalinden Creek fire is located seven kilometres south of Oliver and covers 1,600 hectares. It is 40 per cent contained. Structures have been lost on both fires.

Donations are also being collected for residents in the Rock Creek and Westbridge areas where more than 30 homes have been lost.

Of those, at least four homeowners did not have fire insurance.

The Red Cross says it will only be accepting financial donations because it doesn’t have the manpower to handle material donations.
