Andrew Scheer admits his campaign made a mistake

REGINA – Local Conservative candidate Andrew Scheer admits his campaign made a mistake and staffers will be extra vigilant going forward.

The incumbent for the Regina-Qu’Appelle riding had a “Meet your MP” barbecue planned in Fort Qu’Appelle before the election was called. However, once the writ dropped it became a campaign event.

An email that was sent out had his MP office contact information listed for the RSVP, instead of his campaign office.

Elections Canada contacted Scheer on Friday concerned that public money may be used for the event.

“What they (Elections Canada) wanted to make sure was that when we file our campaign returns that those costs would be included,” said Scheer in an interview with Global Regina on Saturday.

“We said ‘of course they will. They’re legitimate campaign expenditures paid for by the campaign and they will absolutely be included in our campaign’.”

“It is a good lesson early on that we have to dot all our i’s and cross all our t’s.”

Scheer said the mistake was quickly fixed and that only campaign money was used to host the event.
