WINNIPEG — It wasn’t a call that tow truck driver Jeff Hogg has ever had to deal with before but he is now being hailed as a hero for the way he handled it.
Hogg is a tow truck driver in Brandon, Manitoba and received a “lockout” call on Wednesday. The difference with this call was the 18-month-old baby trapped in the car on the other side of town from where he was finishing up a previous call.
“I dropped everything so I could get down there as soon as I could, because it was definitely an urgent matter,” Hogg told 680 CJOB News Thursday morning. The temperature in Brandon at the time was reaching as high as 35 C.

When he arrived, Hogg was told by the mother of the child that when she shut the door after putting the baby in his car seat, it automatically locked with her outside and him in.

“I proceeded to do my lockout and at that point I looked in the backseat and saw that he was starting to get real drowsy and his head was starting to bob down,” Hogg said. “I wasn’t taking any chances I just went and grabbed one of my chains off the side of the truck and smashed out the passenger window.”
The tow truck driver then crawled in, grabbed the baby and handed him to the mother, “He was really red and very, very hot and very drowsy when I got him out of his car seat.”
The ambulance arrived on scene around 5 minutes later and took the baby and mother to hospital. He hasn’t heard from the family and is hoping to hear something soon.
“It’s easy to replace a window, you can’t replace a life.”
