LAKE COUNTRY – Crews were out in full force attacking a grass fire near Lake Country Tuesday afternoon.
Helicopters and air tankers were battling the fast moving blaze and needed all the airspace they could get. Because the blaze was burning so close to the Kelowna airport, YLW was forced to close its airspace for just over a half hour, which meant no take-offs or landings.

“We do have to be aware of safety,” says Jenelle Hynes with the Kelowna International Airport. “That is out number one priority for those fighting the fire and for our flights.”
An incoming flight from Vancouver was turned around and came back later in the day. An incoming flight from Calgary was able to land safely.
The incident occurred during a slower time of day for travel.
“If there was a perfect time to have it happen, this was it,” says Hynes
