Foul play suspected in death of missing Penelakut woman

Delores Brown has been missing since July 27. RCMP handout

Human remains found on an island beside Penelakut Island have been identified as 19-year-old Delores Brown.

Brown’s body was found on Norway Island, which is approximately 30 acres in size and is located beside Penelakut Island. The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit, who was part of the investigation into the mysterious disappearance of Brown, notified her family earlier today.

Ladysmith RCMP, Island District investigators, community members and rescue teams have been searching for Brown since she was reported missing on July 29. She was last seen walking on Penelakut Island wearing blue jeans, a hoody, and carrying a backpack.

Brown lived on Penelakut Island and was travelling to her grandmother’s house in Chemainus but never arrived for the visit. The teen had never gone missing before and her family was very worried.

Her uncharacteristic disappearance and evidence led investigators to believe it is a result of foul play.

“This is very out of character for Miss Brown, who has left behind her phone,” said Ladysmith RCMP Cpl. Rick Fraser.

The BC Coroners Service has not yet determined the cause of her death. Police are continuing their investigation since foul play is suspected in Brown’s death.

Police ask anyone who may have information about Brown’s disappearance or death to contact the Ladysmith RCMP at 250-245-2215 or Crime stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
